Travelling Dietitian Makes it to up up up State New York…Oh Boy! January 19, 2012 Life on Campus- New York 2 Comments So after an insanely long plane ride which saw me travel from Melbourne to LA (14.5hrs) followed by 5 hours transit before heading over to Atlanta (4.5hrs) and a final domestic leg to take me directly to Albany airport (2hrs), I, the travelling dietitian, finally arrived at 1am to an extremely dead and ice cold RPI (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute) where the average temperature is well below -10 degrees celsius and my ears are officially stone cold and numb 24/7. I’ve made the photos sepia to set the tone for you all of this back dated country town which supposedly backs on to the capital of New York (Albany). I was told I would meet interesting people along the way, and that was nothing short of the truth from the word go, my first cab driver, which I unfortunately had twice in one day, was an old war veteran who was telling me about his planned cremation (funerals are apparently too expensive) and how he has taught his dog commands in another language and won’t share what language that is with anyone as he wants to have full control (and ps his dog is apparently half wolf..yep, that’s right, he thought it was warranted to share with me that he files his dogs fangs every couple of months!). Moving on from that, there were also some lovely sales staff who took their 15 minute breaks to help drive me home with all my parcels at one stage, so there you have it, you meet all kinds, even in the first 24 hours! Feeling like the only person alive on this huge campus I took the initiative to travel to walmart, set up my room…. ..and book the first bus out of here! Yes, that’s right, straight on the mega bus and off I went to NYC! Clearly the photos could go on forever, but just to paint the picture, I travelled by foot throughout the city for 3 days and covered quite a bit of ground! I have a few more photos which were taken with some people close to my heart in mind (It’s funny how when you travel you get drawn to some of the most basic silly things just because they remind you of something or someone from back home!), you will know who you are when you see the photos below. Now just to make things more interesting, my bed in NYC translates into a couch in a living room of a male only apartment in Queens…So as you can see (if you scroll down), it is not the four seasons, but I am not one to complain, it’s a roof over my head in NYC and it is pretty nice of them to let me stay if you ask me! Sorry to disappoint anyone hoping for some foodie fun, I promise that will come in the next post! Just trying to keep my family and friends happy too 🙂 As you can see, the next few months will certainly be out of my regular comfort zone of my gorgeous home back in Caulfield, Melbourne, with my beloved family and friends…but as we say, head up, smile, and push on 🙂 Travelling dietitian x Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Related 2 Responses Judy and Michael January 20, 2012 Thankyou for sharing your experiences With those of us unable to be there As we sit here dripping and absolutely Boiling.
